i.  Caroline Joanna WILLIAMS  was born on 04 May 1815 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, England.

She was christened **/07/1817. She died on 26 Jun 1880 in Tete Noir, Switzerland. The cause of death was a drunken driver overturning a carriage in which family was travelling.
Edmund calls her Cary, (other ref she died 25/6/1880)
Caroline married John RIVINGTON on 07 Sep 1843 in Alyesford, Kent, England. Not sure of birth date. He died on 30 Oct 1880 in Babbacombe, Devon, England.
They had the following children:

ii.   Edmund Sydney WILLIAMS  (Sydney) was born on 28 Jan 1817 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, England. He died on 01 Sep 1891 in Bromley, London, England.
    A Publisher, he apprenticed as bookseller in Hamburg where his family had moved to from England in 1918. He then left for London in August 1836 aged 19. Then worked as clerk for Black and Armstrong, booksellers, publishers and printers in London.
Formed (1842/3) the (science) publishing house 'Williams & Norgate' of Covent Garden, London, and South Frederick Street, Edinburgh, in partnership with Frederick Norgate. Specialised in scientific works. Publishers of the Natural History Review. (www.darwinproject.ac.uk)

Aquainted with Charles Dickens, and had much dealings and correspondence through business with Charles Darwin, who visited and stayed with Edmund's uncle William Williams in Bay of Islands, New Zealand. (Most above from his autobiography.)
Edmund married (1) Catherine Kate GOODBAN on 18 Jul 1849 in St Georges Church, Canterbury, England. Kate was born on 27 Oct 1828. She died on 29 Jul 1866 in Balham, London, England.
To Kate Goodban there were 15 children, eleven of whom were still born. Kate died at last birth. Sydney then married Nora Dobell with whom he had 7 more children.

1d.  Herbert Edmund WILLIAMS was born on 11 Apr 1855 in Inverness Terrace, London, England. He died on 03 May 1855 in London, England. [Removed a comment from here (March 2015) re Kate's (Herbert's mother) death being at time of Herberts birth - but she died at a still birth in 1866.

    11 children were stillborn. Dates of birth: 9/1/1853 a boy, 21/3/1856 a boy, 16 March 1858 a boy, 15/01/1859 a boy, Feb 1861 twin boys, 29 Jan 1862 a girl, 4/6/1863 a boy, 9/5/1864 a boy, 19/5/1865 a boy, 29/8/1866 a boy - at which time Kate died. (All from TSW Bible). (All from TSW Bible).
Edmund married (2) Nora Selina DOBELL on 14 Aug 1868 in Cheltenham, England. Nora was born on 13 Apr 1841. She died on 09 Feb 1924.

2a   Edmund Sydney WILLIAMS was born on 08 May 1869. He died on 30 Nov 1938.

2b   Geoffrey Sydney WILLIAMS was born on 01 May 1871 in Hastings, England. He died on 09 Jul 1952.

2c   Juliet Norah WILLIAMS was born on 07 May 1872.

2d   Eric Sydney WILLIAMS was born on 30 Nov 1873.

2e   Amyas Sydney WILLIAMS was born on 12 Aug 1875. He died on 20 Sep 1875. He was buried in Norwood.

2f   Katherine Caroline WILLIAMS was born on 08 Apr 1879.

2g   Ursula Anne WILLIAMS was born on 29 Nov 1881.


iii   John Heath WILLIAMS  was born on 31 Jan 1819 in Altona, Hamburg, Germany. He died on 21 Jun 1899 in Leicestershire, England.
    He worked in the audit office of the London and Birmingham Railway about 1840, then accountant to the Midland and Counties Railway at Leicester when it opened. Then a stock and share broker in Leicester. A 'rigid' dissenter.

John married Emma MIALL on 18 Feb 1848 in Leicester, England. Their children were:
a.  Frank Billingsley WILLIAMS was born on 27 Dec 1848 in Leicester, England.

b.  Sydney Edward WILLIAMS was born on 15 May 1850.

h.  Aubrey Stanley WILLIAMS was born on 31 Jul 1858. He died on 30 May 1859. The cause of death was Scarlet Fever.

i.  Herman Neville WILLIAMS was born on 03 May 1860. He died on 05 Mar 1863. The cause of death was Scarlet Fever.


iv   Betsy Field WILLIAMS  was born on 07 Sep 1820 in Altona, Hamburg, Germany. She died on 22 Feb 1848 in Herman Strasse, Hamburg, Germany.
Born during total eclipse of the sun on 7 Sept.

Betsy married Charles DODGSHUN on 17 Aug 1843 in Hamburg, Germany. Charles was born on 19 Dec 1820 in Batley, West Yorkshire, England. He died on 09 Jan 1848.
They had the following children:
a.   Joseph Sydney DODGSHUN was born on 04 Jun 1844 in Hamburg, Germany. He died in 1899.

He was accountant for the Wiliams Estate at Waipiro Bay north of Gisborne.  Sydney's son, Gordon Mawley Dodgshun b 13.11.1884 at Gisborne, N.Z. and d. 14.02.1970, married Freda Lilian Davies descendant of Henry Williams (Sydney's grand uncle) (p 218 F&F).

b.  Lydia Sarah DODGSHUN was born on 10 Jan 1846 in Geist Felde, Hamburg, Germany.

c.  Charles Herbert DODGSHUN (Charley) was born on 31 Jan 1848 in Hermann Strasse, Hamburg, Germany.
Born 22 days after his father's, and 22 days before his mother's death.


v   Edward Philip WILLIAMS  was born on 17 Jul 1822 in Altona, Hamburg, Germany. He was christened in Hamburg, Germany. He died on 04 May 1911.

He was known as 'Philip', and married Julia MIALL daughter of Moses MIALL on 23 Jul 1856 in Gallowtreegate, Leicester, England. Julia was born on 17 Nov 1825 in Islington, Middlesex, England. She died on 25 Jan 1914 in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England.
Edward and Julia had the following children:

xii   Alfred Heathcote WILLIAMS  was born on 14 May 1835 - (C McC suggests Klusgin Stregst Paulin Germany, (Herd book), for birth place). He died on 25 Aug 1874 in Calcutta, India.
Alfred married (Ann / Annie?) Georgiana Gwyther on 17 Mar 1860 in Barrackpore, West Bengal, India. She was born on 18 Apr 1842 in Barrackpore.
At the time of Alfred's marriagehe was a Sergeant in the Bengal Light Cavalry.

xiii   Jessie Carr WILLIAMS  was born on 16 Feb 1839 in Hamburg, Germany. She was christened on 07 Apr 1839. She died on 20 Nov 1911.

Jessie married Rev. James Allanson PICTON (his 2nd marriage), son of Sir James Allanson PICTON and Sarah POOLEY on 20 Mar 1866 in Clapham, London, England. James was born on 08 Aug 1832 in Liverpool, England. He died on 04 Feb 1910 in Caerlyr, Penmaenmawr, North Wales. He was buried in Liverpool, England.
  He was small in stature, possessed much oratorical power. An 'uncompromising radical'. Studied for ministry. A study of German philosophy dissatisfied him with conventional doctrine.
  Appointed to Cheetham Hill congregational church, Manchester. In 1869 he became pastor of St. Thomas's Square chapel, Hackney, remaining there till 1879.   In 1883 he was accepted as a radical candidate for parliament for the Tower Hamlets, but withdrew in 1884, when in June he entered parliament as member for Leicester, succeeding Peter Alfred Taylor, most of whose opinions he shared. He was reelected for Leicester in 1885, 1886, and 1892, retiring from the House of Commons and from public life in 1894.
  He wrote much in the press and published many sermons, pamphlets, and volumes on religion and politics. His books included : 1. 'A Catechism of the Gospels', 1866. 2. 'New Theories and the Old Faith', 1870. 3. 'The Mystery of Matter', 1873. 4. 'The Religion of Jesus', 1876. 5. 'Pulpit Discourses', 1879. 6. 'Oliver Cromwell: the Man and his Mission', 1882 (a popular eulogy). 7. 'Lessons from the English Commonwealth', 1884. 8. 'The Conflict of Oligarchy and Democracy', 1885. 9. 'Sir James A.
